What is the FRM3 module

The FRM3 (Footwell Module) is the electronic unit that manages exterior and interior lighting, power windows, mirrors and part of the CAN/LIN bus communication on many BMW and MINI models.
It is commonly found on:

• BMW 1 Series E81, E82, E87, E88

• BMW 3 Series E90, E91, E92, E93

• BMW X1 E84, X5 E70, X6 E71

• MINI R55, R56, R57, R60, R61

Failures usually occur after a battery replacement, a jump start / booster start, a short circuit in the lighting circuit or water ingress.

Typical symptoms of a faulty FRM3

If the FRM3 module is corrupted or damaged, you may see:

• Headlights, side lights, brake lights or turn signals that don’t work at all

• No interior lights (dome light, boot, glovebox, dashboard lighting)

• Power windows and mirrors that no longer respond to commands

• FRM communication faults in diagnostics (no connection or intermittent response)

• Warning messages in the cluster related to lights / safety

• Specific fault codes in other modules, such as:

  • A3B4, A3C1 – incorrect lighting messages

  • 9CBB / 9CBC / 9BCC – short circuit fault / short circuit counter exceeded

  • E72B / E72C – window function faults

In many cases, the problem is software-related (FLASH/EEPROM memory corruption), not necessarily a mechanical failure of the module.

• Opening and inspecting the circuit board (power supplies, drivers, processor, EEPROM)

When it’s worth sending the FRM3 module for repair

• After a battery replacement or booster start, when the module no longer communicates

• After a short circuit on the brake / side / number plate lights, when one or more lights stay permanently off

• When you have several lighting faults at once and no workshop can find a clear problem in the wiring

• When the windows and mirrors stop working and diagnostics reports no communication with the FRM

In most cases, an FRM3 repair is much more cost-effective than replacing it with a new dealer module.

How to send the FRM3 module to Vision Garage

1. Preliminary diagnostics
   We recommend a diagnostic with a dedicated BMW tester (ISTA, etc.) to confirm the suspected faulty FRM. Keep the fault report to include it in the parcel.

2. Removing the module

   • Disconnect the vehicle battery

   • The FRM3 module is located in the driver’s footwell (bottom left, behind the trim panels)

   • Carefully remove the trim and unplug the connectors without forcing the pins

3. Packing and shipping

   • Pack the module in anti-static packaging or protect it well with bubble wrap

   • Include in the parcel: your contact details, VIN, the symptoms observed and the diagnostic report

   • Send the parcel by express courier to the Vision Garage address in Arad, Romania

4. Processing and return

   • Usual turnaround time: 1–3 working days from receipt of the module

   • After the repair, you will receive the FRM3 together with installation and testing recommendations

Limitations and conditions

• Repairs cannot be guaranteed for modules with heavy burn damage, severe oxidation or improper previous interventions (thick solder joints, destroyed tracks, missing components). In these cases, we discuss the option of cloning onto another FRM or returning the module in the condition received.

• The customer is responsible for checking that the problem is related to the FRM module and that the car’s electrical system (wires, bulbs, fuses) has been checked or repaired beforehand.

• The service is intended exclusively for vehicle owners and workshops that can prove they have the vehicle in for work (workshop job card / estimate).
