What is the FRM3 module?

The FRM3 module (Footwell Module) is the electronic unit that manages exterior and interior lighting, power windows, mirrors and part of the CAN/LIN bus communication in many BMW and MINI models.
We frequently find:

• BMW 1 Series E81, E82, E87, E88

• BMW 3 Series E90, E91, E92, E93

• BMW X1 E84, X5 E70, X6 E71

• MINI R55, R56, R57, R60, R61

Faults usually occur after battery replacement, jump starting, short circuit in the lighting system, or water infiltration.

Typical symptoms of faulty FRM3

If the FRM3 module is corrupted or damaged, the following may occur:

• Headlights, taillights, taillights or turn signals that no longer work at all

• Lack of interior lights (ceiling light, trunk, glove box, dashboard lighting)

• Power windows and mirrors that no longer respond to commands

• Communication errors with FRM in diagnosis (no connection or intermittent response)

• Error messages on the dashboard related to lights/safety

• Specific error codes in other modules, such as:

  • A3B4, A3C1 – incorrect lighting messages

  • 9CBB / 9CBC / 9BCC – short circuit fault / short circuit counter exceeded ABS Steering Devices+1

  • E72B / E72C – errors on the window function

In many cases, the problem is a software one (FLASH/EEPROM memory corruption), not necessarily a mechanical failure of the module.

• When you have multiple lighting errors at the same time and no service can find a clear problem with the installation

• When the windows and mirrors stop working, and the diagnosis reports a lack of communication with the FRM

Most of the time, FRM3 repair is much more advantageous than replacing it with a new dealership module.

How to send the FRM3 module to VisionGarage

1. Preliminary diagnosis
   We recommend a diagnosis with a dedicated BMW tester (ISTA, etc.) to confirm the suspicion of a faulty FRM. Keep the error report to include in the package.

2. Removing the module

   • Disconnect the vehicle battery

   • The FRM3 module is positioned in the driver's footwell (bottom left, behind the plastics)

   • Carefully remove the plastic and remove the plugs without forcing the pins.

3. Packaging and shipping

   • Pack the module in antistatic packaging or well protected with bubble wrap.

   • Include in the package: contact details, VIN, observed symptoms and diagnostic report

   • Send the package by express courier to VisionGarage Arad

4. Processing and return

   • Usual working time: 1–3 business days from the moment of receiving the module

   • After repair, you will receive FRM3 along with assembly and testing recommendations

Limitations and conditions

• Repairs cannot be guaranteed for modules with severe burnout, severe oxidation, or previous improper interventions (thick solder joints, broken tracks, missing parts). In these cases, we discuss the option of cloning onto another FRM or returning in the condition received.

• The customer is responsible for verifying that the problem is related to the FRM module and that the car's electrical installation (wires, bulbs, fuses) has been checked or repaired beforehand.

• The service is exclusively aimed at vehicle owners and workshops that can demonstrate that they have the vehicle in service (service entry form / quote).
